Many people in the market for a Pit Bull puppy choose to buy that puppy from a breeder. It is important to talk to several different breeders before making a purchase so that you can make the most well informed decision. Breeders should be used to answering questions, so don’t be intimidated when interviewing one.You need to ask questions so that you can find the puppy that is the best fit for you.

Serious breeders should be able to tell you all about their breeding line. They will be able to inform you of any negative traits or behavioral issues, as well as any health problems that have occurred with their puppies. Breeders should also be able to tell you what they have done to improve their methods to avoid behavioral or health problems.

Breeders should also be able to walk you through their process for selecting which dogs to breed and what the likely outcomes of that breeding will be, such as personality, color, health, size, etc.

You should find out how many different types of the dogs the breeder breeds. Some feel that it is better to breed only one type of dog. To ensure pure blood, you would probably want to select a breeder that only works with American Pit Bull Terriers.

Good breeders have more interest in the breed than just monetary gain. They should love the animals they have chosen to breed. Many breeders not only breed animals, but are involved in dog shows, training, etc.

It is also important to purchase from a breeder that tries to keep in touch with the people who have purchased his puppies. This shows that the breeder truly does care about the puppies and where they end up, and should also be easy for owners to contact should a problem arise.

Breeding many litters each year can sometimes lead to different issues, and it is recommended to avoid breeders that do this. Health of the dogs also tends to decline if there have been a lot of breeds in a short time frame.

You should definitely ask to see where the puppies are kept, which will give you an idea of how well they are cared for.

This is just a few things that should be considered when purchasing a Pit Bull puppy from a breeder. You should research all aspects before making a final decision, which should help you end up with the best puppy for you.

I am going out to purchase an all Black Male American Pit Bull Terrier. I just wanted to know could they be used as guard dogs?
The only reason I don't want to adopt is because I don't know those dogs. They could have been put through it all. Abuse, Dog fighting. I don't think adopting would be a good idea.

You’ve made up your mind, it’s the American Pit Bull Terrier you want as your companion. Are you ready for this breed? Read this article and then decide if you want to go ahead with your decision.Does your lifestyle fit the American Pit Bull Terrier
lifestyle?

These dogs are packed with energy from head to toe. Craving a good run like a champion athlete. Exercise is critical to a heathy, happy bulldog. High energy is their middle name and is a large part of their personalities. Play, work, and activity is something you must be able to give these dogs.If you’re a couch potato you should find another breed to live with.

Do you have the security?

American Pit Bull Terriers are the Houdini’s of the canine world. Able to leap tall fences with a single bound, dig under them with amazing speed and stealth, and unlock gates that people would have trouble with.

You should have 6′ privacy fence, beware of dog signs, hot wiring at the top and bottom of the fence, out door housing that keeps them out of the sun (even if they live indoors), and supervision are required for these dogs. You can’t leave them alone for long outside because one of two things may happen:

1. They escape. 2. They’re stolen.

Are you prepared for the scrutiny of neighbors and friends?

American Pit Bull Terriers are notorious. They have a bad name and the misinformed public is out to get them. It seems like everyday another “Baby mauled by pit bull” story runs, diminishing your choice of breed.

People will dislike you for your choice. Some may even try to kill your dog. Others will direct comments at you, vulgar, hateful comments, and friends and family may also be in conflict with your choice.Be prepared for some rude behavior and protect your dog by teaching food refusal from strangers.

Can you train your dog?

There are two methods of training. One is to train your dog by showing it how to sit and lay down and then quitting. The other lasts forever. Real training is life long training that starts when the puppy arrives at your home and ends with death.

Unless you’re prepared to work with your dog 5-10-15 minutes per day, everyday, all week, every week, all year, every year, you may want to rethink your decision to get a Pit Bulldog. Actually, if you’re not prepared to train your dog, you should rethink getting any dog. Training is a fact of life and must be done in order to prevent a lot of trouble down the road.If you can not control your dog, you don’t need one.

Can you afford them?

Dog food, vet bills, training, leashes and collars, and dog houses all cost money. Money you may not have right now. A quality dog food can cost as much as $800 per year. Do you have this kind of extra money to spend on food? If not, wait until you do before you bring home that puppy.Do you want a American Pit Bull Terrier to impress people?

If this is the case, stop! Do not, repeat, do not bring one home. You’re doing yourself and the dog a great injustice. American Pit Bull Terriers are in demand because of their all around strength, agility, great looks, and mystic. Breeders are pumping puppies out like unleaded gasoline. Puppies are being neglected and bad breeding practices are producing unstable dogs. Beware before you make any final decisions.

If I may point you in a different direction. Every day there are thousands of great bulldogs put down because no one will adopt them or they are deemed “unadoptable” by shelters.

Consider a Rescue Dog.

People who love this breed have created rescues for these dogs and hundreds of dogs are available for adoption.

Rescues are a win-win-win way to go. You give a dog that would otherwise not have a home, a home. You give your money (which in most cases is a small adoption fee) to the rescue so they can continue their work, and you get an awesome dog that will 9 times out of 10 deliver more than any pure-bred dog could on their best day.

In closing, before you run out and buy a American Pit Bull Terrier, think about your options, make sure you have what it takes to provide and care for the dog, and take your time to find a dog that matches your desires.

People might be wondering why there is such a name as “bull dog”.

Originally, Great Britain and later, America were obsessed with bloody fights between bulls and dogs. The main function of the canine is to hang on to the bull’s neck and worry the poor animal until it dies. Obviously, these dogs had developed great strength in their jaws.

Among the popular choices of dogs for this sport were the pit bulls. Back then, the selection of pit bulls was so varied that many showed a variety of characteristics that made the sport highly interesting. Later in the life of the sport though, the center of attraction switched towards the fight between pit bulls and not against the bulls themselves.

From these canines rooted most of the bull dog terriers that we know of today.

One of the significant bull dog terriers we have is the American Staffordshire Terrier who is of great interest since it possesses intriguing seemingly opposing characters.

They project strength and physically power but they are not vicious. In fact, this dog is very much associated with its relationship to its family, especially among children. The physical features it has are now only due to their basic nature and orientation during their bloody fights as fighting machines. But this does not negate the fact that they can sometimes show aggressiveness which may somehow work against them. Nevertheless, this can be set off with their loving nature and devotion to human family. Thus, it has a stable temperament which make them good pets and excellent watchdogs.

AmStaff terrier, as it is called by its shorter name suffers in reputation though since it is commonly associated with pit bulls. These dogs are known for their love for challnge and are therefore employed in illegal dog fighting.

Most of the problems root from irresponsible training. Sadly, there are too few AmStaff that are properly trained. And what’s even depressing is that there are innumerable pit bulls that are continually ill-treated by sadistic owners.

We are often confused of what true pit bulls are. In fact, many contend that these dogs must not be called by that name since it elicits unwanted images of gory dog fights. While this breed is not yet officially recognized by the American Dog Breeders Association or the United Kennel Club, the legitimate name remains to be American Pit Bull Terrier.

While it is true that American Pit Bull Terrier is violent in nature, this doesn’t imply that they are made purely for brutal stuffs. As we have earlier said, these dogs are only products of maltreatment and exploitive training (and inhumane) for self serving purposes. Otherwise, American Pit Bull Terriers can be very people loving.

These are also known for their being hardworking on which they excel from. They are also fond of excessive physical activities that would exhaust their power reserves. Thus, this breed is great for those who need company during athletic training. If you are the couch potato personality, please find another breed of dog that would suit your lifestyle.

To clear things off, American Pit Bull Terrier are not officially recognized not because of its ill reputation but mainly due to beliefs that it is not a purebred. One major standard for a dog to be distinguished as member of Kennel Clubs is that it should be purebred. Until more comprehensive findings on its origin are found, this dog will remain unfortunately tagged as “nasty”.

It's pretty pathetic that people post websites depicting these dogs to be cruel and violent. You relly need to do some research and figure out that your little dog's are more likely to bit you or someone else than a pit bull. These are the most compasionate dogs on earth. You just have to raise then and treat them right. Just like anything living. You can neglect and beat a child and they will rebel too!

One little known but very real danger to Pit Bulls is second hand smoke. We know that second hand smoke has been proven to cause cancer and many other health problems among people, there is now research being done to see how it affects household pets. So far there have been some instances where animals exposed to second hand smoke have higher risk factors for developing cancer and many other diseases.

These studies so far have shown links to second hand smoke and nasal cancer and lung cancer in dogs. The longer you expose your Pit Bull to second hand smoke, the more you are putting his health at risk. As a Pit Bull owner myself, I feel as though even a small risk is too much when it comes to his health. As loving and responsible Pit Bull owners it is up to us to protect them from every possible danger we can, so why take unnecessary risks.

It is important to have your Pit Bull regularly examined by his veterinarian, and if he has been exposed to second hand smoke, you should advise your veterinarian of this as soon as possible. In many cases being diagnosed early can save your Pit Bull’s life, not just with cancer, but with all kinds of other diseases as well. You should ensure your Pit Bull has regular preventative care appointments with his veterinarian so you can catch any potential problems early and treat them before they compromise your Pit Bull’s health.

If the love if your Pitt Bull is not enough to stop you from exposing him to second hand smoke, just think of the costs of treating him, if he were to develop cancer or sickness from exposure. Most cancers, not all, are treatable if diagnosed early, but the treatment for dogs that have cancer is much the same as that for humans. You would be looking at possible surgery, and tons of chemotherapy or radiation, which over time is sure to amount in large veterinary bills. Even with treatment, there is no guarantee of a cure. You may very well being exposing your Pit Bull to something that could very easily kill him. Scary thought, isn’t it?

So the next time you light up around your Pit Bull, ask yourself is it worth possibly losing his life? If you must smoke, go to an area away from him, and try not to let other people smoke in his vicinity either. You are responsible for your Pit Bull’s safety, so why take useless chances with him?

This kind of dog is known for its aggressiveness to other dogs but as a pet they will be your companion. These dogs are well known for their intelligence and loyalty and are also very protective of their owners. Many people mistake them for staffies, which is short for Staffordshire terrier but this is not a staffie. An American pit bull terrier is a mix of two dogs, a terrier and bulldog. They are of their own kind and cannot and should not be referred to as staffies. I have seen the UKC shows and I have never seen a pit bull on it.

These are some things that the owner may want to know about pit bulls. They are classified as terriers by the kennel organizations, hence the full name, American Pit Bull Terrier. They are equally happy indoors or outdoors, although we tend to keep ours indoors the majority of the time because they love being around us. They are very social dogs and will go bonkers if you don’t give them a lot of attention.

These are also short haired dogs with coats that are shiny and smooth although they do come in a great variety of colors. We currently have a female that is black with a white chest and nose and another that is the desired red nose variety that is red all over. He also has golden eyes and is one of the most beautiful pits I have ever seen.

American Pit Bull Terriers vary greatly in size as well. The dog that my son has is only around 45 pounds while his father was about 90 pounds. They range from thirty to over one hundred pounds depending on their lineage and are usually from 18 to 24 inches tall although I have seen some larger.

As with any dog they should be bathed on a regular basis to keep them clean and free of irritants. You should also brush them twice a month and rub them down with a towel or rag to shake off loose hair. Also be sure that they get plenty of exercise so that they will sleep well at night. If you are exercising them in public always keep them on a leash to avoid any accidents.

Due to their fierce loyalty and protectiveness it is best that you socialize the animals with as many people and other animals as possible when they are young. If you do this you will avoid the problems that many people have with them when they are older. I have had several and none of them have been aggressive. It is all in how you raise them.

When many people think of Pit Bulls, they automatically think of all the bad things they have heard about them. While Pit Bulls can be aggressive, they have great ability to be a loving, devoted pet to a caring owner. Caring owners should become familiar with their pets personality traits, and learn how to deal with them. Pit Bulls that are raised with owners who love them and give them the attention they crave, do very well at suppressing their aggressiveness and turn out to be very tame, loving dogs. Pit Bulls have a very deep need for attention, and if they don’t get it, sometimes they will indulge in destructive behaviors out of their disappointment and lonesomeness.

While having the ability to do very well with humans, Pit Bulls have a hard time controlling their aggressiveness around other dogs. This is due in part to the fact that at one time the sole purpose of breeding a Pit Bull was for it to fight other dogs. They usually behave worse around dogs that are of the same gender as they are.

Pit Bulls tend to do best with owners that would be very devoted to caring for their pet. They require a great deal of time and attention for training and exercise. Pit Bulls are probably not the best choice for people with hectic schedules, or who spend a lot of time away from home. Due to their aggressive nature, Pit Bulls do better in families that do now have other pets at home.

If raised in loving homes with responsible owners, Pit Bulls can fit in well with families with children. They tend to get over excited occasionally and may jump on or knock children down, but usually won’t harm them. Proper training of the Pit Bull can help them better learn to deal with children and situations where they may have issues.

For all intents and purposes Pit Bulls tend to be easy to train. Some believe it has to do with the fact that they strive to please their owners, and that they are highly intelligent dogs. They do well in training programs that are centered around positive reinforcement.

Pit Bulls are usually very healthy dogs, and most live anywhere from twelve to fourteen years. They do have some health problems common to the breed, but regular check-ups with a veterinarian can help prevent many of those before they occur. Veterinarians can also help the owner with suggestions on training, feeding, and general care of the pet to ensure the best outcomes.

While they do require a great deal of care in order to thrive, Pit Bulls can make terrific pets. They need to be owners that are responsible, loving and devoted to what is best for them. Pit Bulls are a usually social breed, and therefore require a lot of attention. The breed is often overlooked when in the market for a pet, but with the right owner can be a great pet.

Before there was such a thing as a “bad breed” there was Luke, a pit bull terrier who appeared in many films with his master, Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle (1887-1933), from 1914 to 1920, along with Buster Keaton and Al St. John. Born in 1913, he became one of the first canine film stars, earned $150 a week for his master and was very popular with audiences. A high energy companion to the slapstick antics of his human costars, he was a natural for early comedy shorts. Very people oriented …
Help answer the question about Pit Bull Terriers
How do you explain to the average person why American Pit Bull Terriers aren't vicious killers?
While making it short and to the point.

There are so many things I would like to say to people who ask me about my APBTs, but the average person doesn't want to be lectured — I know if someone was explaining the entire history of their dog's breed to me I'd become annoyed.

How do other APBT owners (or the owners of dogs seen as monsters) explain things to curious strangers?
2boys2dogs2birds, I honestly wonder where people like you get their information. There has never been any scientific studies to back up anything you have said. Repeating things that you have heard or making up false information yourself from your opinions is terribly ignorant. I almost feel sorry for you.
GotNewfs?, I completely agree with you. I for one second have never stated that APBTs aren't dog-aggressive or have a high prey drive — I know that only too well and never allow my APBTs to be alone together for that same reason. Fortunately, however, my problem is with those who think that this breed, as a whole, is human-aggressive.
Some people have obviously misunderstood my question. I'm not out to prove anything to anyone who already has their mind set on how aggressive APBTs are. My question was how to explain to someone who has an honest curiosity about APBTs.

One of the most misunderstood dog breeds is the American Pit Bull Terrier. People tend to love the animal or hate it; in some cases this is based on experience in others only rumor.

During the nineteenth century Bulldogs were crossed with Terriers in hopes of creating a dog with the gameness of the Terrier and the toughness of the Bulldog. This combination created a versatile dog which became a favorite of farmers and ranchers in Europe and the United States. Uses for the animal included hunting, moving livestock, protection, and family companionship.

The Pit Bull us a medium sized dog with full grown adults weighing in from twenty-two pounds to potentially one hundred pounds, and stand eighteen to twenty-two inches high. The dog is very solidly built and has very well-defined musculature.

The coat if the Pit Bull Terrier has a glossy sheen, is short but very thick and is smooth but stiff to the touch. To rid the coat of loose hair occasionally brush with a firm bristle brush. Also regularly rub down the coat with a chamois cloth to clean the coat as well as buff the glossy shine. The coat colors for the breed can be as simple as black or white or a variety of color combinations.

Despite the reputation the Pit Bull breed is one of the most loyal, devoted, good-natured, affectionate dogs available. The animal is extremely fun and intelligent with the energy and enthusiasm for frisbee and ball games. They are also big lovers of people and early socialization is needed to teach good manners. With older children the dog does very well, but smaller children do not mix well with them. With other animals in the home they do very well with ones they were raised with, but they will show aggression to other dogs and smaller animals. Though they are very protective of their family, the breed does not make a good guard dog due to their social tendency with people.

Pit Bulls are very active dogs which need to be exercised vigorously every day. Play time of chasing a ball, hiking, catching a frisbee, or running with a mountain bike are some of the activities that dog thrives with. If exercised sufficiently the dog can live in an apartment with no problems. Otherwise a yard will be needed for more exercise time.

Pit Bull ownership is not for everyone though. The breed has a reputation for being overly aggressive and in some cities ownership is regulated and even not allowed. This reputation is not necessarily deserved, as the dog is not at fault as much as the owner. The dogs tend to be aggressive with strange dogs and they possess a high prey drive. A responsible owner who can properly care for, train, and exercise them is needed to have a great dog/owner relationship. Vigilance is needed to ensure the dog does not roam unsupervised and remains on-leash when in public places. If aggression is ever shown toward a human being, which is actually uncharacteristic, the dog should be evaluated by a professional to determine the problem that needs corrected.
