People might be wondering why there is such a name as “bull dog”.
Originally, Great Britain and later, America were obsessed with bloody fights between bulls and dogs. The main function of the canine is to hang on to the bull’s neck and worry the poor animal until it dies. Obviously, these dogs had developed great strength in their jaws.
Among the popular choices of dogs for this sport were the pit bulls. Back then, the selection of pit bulls was so varied that many showed a variety of characteristics that made the sport highly interesting. Later in the life of the sport though, the center of attraction switched towards the fight between pit bulls and not against the bulls themselves.
From these canines rooted most of the bull dog terriers that we know of today.
One of the significant bull dog terriers we have is the American Staffordshire Terrier who is of great interest since it possesses intriguing seemingly opposing characters.
They project strength and physically power but they are not vicious. In fact, this dog is very much associated with its relationship to its family, especially among children. The physical features it has are now only due to their basic nature and orientation during their bloody fights as fighting machines. But this does not negate the fact that they can sometimes show aggressiveness which may somehow work against them. Nevertheless, this can be set off with their loving nature and devotion to human family. Thus, it has a stable temperament which make them good pets and excellent watchdogs.
AmStaff terrier, as it is called by its shorter name suffers in reputation though since it is commonly associated with pit bulls. These dogs are known for their love for challnge and are therefore employed in illegal dog fighting.
Most of the problems root from irresponsible training. Sadly, there are too few AmStaff that are properly trained. And what’s even depressing is that there are innumerable pit bulls that are continually ill-treated by sadistic owners.
We are often confused of what true pit bulls are. In fact, many contend that these dogs must not be called by that name since it elicits unwanted images of gory dog fights. While this breed is not yet officially recognized by the American Dog Breeders Association or the United Kennel Club, the legitimate name remains to be American Pit Bull Terrier.
While it is true that American Pit Bull Terrier is violent in nature, this doesn’t imply that they are made purely for brutal stuffs. As we have earlier said, these dogs are only products of maltreatment and exploitive training (and inhumane) for self serving purposes. Otherwise, American Pit Bull Terriers can be very people loving.
These are also known for their being hardworking on which they excel from. They are also fond of excessive physical activities that would exhaust their power reserves. Thus, this breed is great for those who need company during athletic training. If you are the couch potato personality, please find another breed of dog that would suit your lifestyle.
To clear things off, American Pit Bull Terrier are not officially recognized not because of its ill reputation but mainly due to beliefs that it is not a purebred. One major standard for a dog to be distinguished as member of Kennel Clubs is that it should be purebred. Until more comprehensive findings on its origin are found, this dog will remain unfortunately tagged as “nasty”.

Help answer the question about Pit Bull Terriers
Why does everyone think that pit bull terriers are bad dogs? It's pretty pathetic that people post websites depicting these dogs to be cruel and violent. You relly need to do some research and figure out that your little dog's are more likely to bit you or someone else than a pit bull. These are the most compasionate dogs on earth. You just have to raise then and treat them right. Just like anything living. You can neglect and beat a child and they will rebel too!

The American Pit Bull Terrier is absolutely my favorite dog breed. They are smart, affectionate, and loyal. I also have a 1 year old female pit bull, she is the sweetest dog in the world. She is everything I could ever want in a pet. I adopted her from an animal shelter. My parents hate dogs, but they especially hate pit bulls. They would not come 100 feet from a pit bull. After I got my dog, I took her to my parents house so they could meet her. After being there for 15 minutes, Cadence was in my mom's lap, giving her kisses on her face!! A pit bull was giving my mom kisses on her face!! And my mom was completely comfortable with it. Pit bulls are wonderful dogs. I will never own another breed.
A pit bull is not born mean. You hear about mean pit bulls because people who want an aggressive dog are attracted to pit bulls because they look tough. These are the people who abuse, neglect, and train them to be aggressive. These are the people who need to be addressed. These are the people who can make Any dog breed a dangerous dog (I was attacked by a Golden Retriever!). It is the owner, not the dog.
I have one of each..both spade females. My Pit is about 4" shorter and about the same difference in length from my Amstaff. My Amstaff has a little bit longer ears but she can "perk" them up (still a fold at the top)
My Pit has smaller ears and she can "perk"hers up with only a very small fold at the top.Of course, neither one has been cut YUK!! I hate seeing cut ears.
My Amstaff weighs 72lbs while my Pit is 37lbs.(all muscle,no fat).
No. Albert was well trained and had showed ZERO signs that he would do anything bad.
I know that you want to protect the breed that you love but this kind of ’snap’ has been widely reported about.
Of course, there is a lot of hysteria about PBs and that helps nobody but neither does blindly denying any problems that arise.
People can just snap and so can dogs. It is not that PB’s are MORE vicious it is just that they are devastating when they DO attack.
Ignorant? That’s a shame
When I clicked on the links you provided to your dog, I get taken to the login page for myspace. But, without seeing the pictures I can tell you that if your dog looks like some of both, she probably is. Whenever a breed becomes popular, there's a tendency for every jack*** and their grandma to suddenly think it's a good idea to breed their dog regardless of the dog's ancestry. And, in the case of the APBT, there's been some definite outcrossing done with larger bull breeds to produce a larger, blockier dog. (An example of greedy breeders pandering to the masses in my opinion). APBTs and ABs are both wonderful dogs. She's probably some of both. So go with whichever you think she looks like the most. And, enjoy your dog!
By the way, you aren't the only one who has problems discerning whether a dog is really a pit bull. I've passed on this test to shelter workers, vet techs, etc. No one has picked the APBT out of the line up on the first try that I know of so far. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html
Couple of teenage girls are going around making videos to harass and threaten those who save Pitbulls
Here is one of their videos against a person thanking a rescue for saving their Pitbull. =hCWTfQJsNoA
What is going on with YouTube ? Why do they allow this against Pitbulls? If it was against Lab Puppies it would be immediately deleted.
you know what i do to the loser dog?! i eat it for dinner
I agree. It’s like some wimp picking a fight with a prof. boxer… any dog can attack. They are after all STILL ANIMALS. I know from personal experience that chihuahuas are more likely to attack than a pitbull.
Fort minor remember the name
There are 3 different types of American Bulldog.Johnson,Scott and hybrid(Johnson x Scott).American Bulldogs are more of a guardian dog than the APBT.They are larger and probably less refined when it comes to human interaction which to me means they could be harder to train than an APBT.
Here is a link to a forum with some basic info, links and discussion: http://www.pitbull-chat.com/forumdisplay.php?f=111
It's a pit bull forum but that sub forum is dedicated to American Bulldogs.

Pit bulls aren't the smartest of dogs. they are big loving oafs. Seriously. Big stupid loving dogs, lol.
Some are VERY intelligent and excel at training, but I've noticed most are a little stubborn and slow, so they just need more time and patience. But their love for their owner helps with the training. Most pits will do anything to please you.
If you can afford it, I recomend a proffesional trainer that has experience with the breed. Good luck
BTW, I hope you are only wanting to purchase him at 2 weeks! You NEED to leave him with his mother until he is at LEAST 8 weeks old! Any sooner then that, and you could wind up with an emotionaly unstable dog
The only TRUE breed of pit bull is the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT). And don't let idiots on here tell you that an APBT is a mix, because it's NOT. It is in fact the oldest registered breed with the UKC, and has been registered for over 100 years.
The AKC did not like the "pit bull" name, so when they registered the APBT some 50 years later then the UKC, they changed the name to American Staffordshire Terrier. Same breed, different names under different kennel clubs. There are many great examples of the breed that are cross registered with both kennel clubs as both breeds. Some argue that because the breeds have been bred seperately due to registration, they are not the same breed. However, because they started as the same breed that was only split because of the name and kennel registrations, and because no other breeds have been introduced into either breed, they ARE the same breed! Plus the fact that MANY dogs are cross registered with both kennels as both breeds.
Any other "pit bull" is NOT a pit bull. It is a mastiff or terrier breed that idiots label as a "pit bull" because they are too stupid and ignorant to learn about their breeds. Again, the American PIT BULL Terrier is the only breed with PIT BULL in the name. Therefor, the only PIT BULL.
Over 30 different breeds are considered pit bulls. Staffordshire Terriers are the most common. They share a lot of the same lineage with the APBT, but they have bulldog mixed in as well, making them shorter and stockier. Dogo Argentinos, Cane Corsos, American Bulldogs, and many other breeds are called pit bulls.
EDIT: Believe me because I'm actually intelligent and know what I'm talking about! lol
Here are some websites explaining the split

Quotes from above website:
" A common question regarding the APBT is, "How is this breed different from the American Staffordshire Terrier?". In the eyes of the United Kennel Club, they are the same breed, but many disagree. Some AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terriers are dual-registered as American Pit Bull Terriers with the UKC; however, this draws criticism from many who point out that the bloodlines have been separate for too long for these to be considered the same breed." (in my mind, saying just because they have been bred seperately makes them different breeds is idiotic! Does that mean dalmations bred in america are not the same breed as dalmations bred in london? Their lines are bred apart, so does that make them different breeds?)
"In 1898 the United Kennel Club was formed with the express intent of providing registration and fighting guidelines for the now officially-named American Pit Bull Terrier. Later, those who wished to distance themselves from the fighting aspect of the breed petitioned the American Kennel Club for recognition of the Pit Bull so that it would be eligible for dog shows and other performance events. The AKC conceded in 1936 but only under the stipulation that the dogs registered with them be called "Staffordshire Terriers", the name of the province in England the breed supposedly originated in. Upon acceptance of the breed, many people dual-registered their dogs with both the AKC and the UKC. Lucenay's Peter (the dog that starred in the Our Gang (Little Rascals) series) was the first dual-registered Pit Bull/Staffordshire Terrier."
http://www.canismajor.com/dog/amerpit.html
"The AKC eschewed breeds called "pit bulls" until 1936, when it recognized the American Pit Bull Terrier under the alias Staffordshire Terrier, named after the miners of Staffordshire, England, who had a hand in developing the breed for the fighting pit. The name was changed in 1972 to the American Staffordshire Terrier to distinguish the breed from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of England, the ancestor of the American dogs, which was recognized by AKC in 1974."
